Endpoint security:
Endpoint security is the practice of protecting end-user device endpoints or entry points, such as desktops, laptops, and mobile devices, from being misused by malicious actors or campaigns. An endpoint security system protects these endpoints from cybersecurity threats on your network or in the cloud. Endpoint security has evolved from traditional antivirus software to comprehensive protection against advanced malware and emerging zero-day threats (What is endpoint security? ).

What's considered an endpoint ?
An endpoint is any device that connects to the corporate network from outside its firewall. Examples of endpoint devices include:
- Laptops
- Tablets
- mobile devices
- Internet of things(IoT) devices
- Point-of-sale (POS) systems
- Switches
- Digital printers

Why is endpoint security important?
An endpoint security strategy is essential as any remote endpoint can be an entry point for an attack. And the number of endpoints continues to grow with the rapid shift to remote work due to the pandemic. According to a Gallup poll, the majority of U.S. workers will be working remotely in 2020, and as of April 2021, 51% will still be working remotely. The risk posed by endpoints and their sensitive data is a never-ending challenge.
The endpoint landscape is constantly changing, making organizations of all sizes attractive targets for cyberattacks. This is common knowledge even in small companies. According to a 2020 study by Connectwise, 77% of 700 SMB decision makers surveyed fear they will be targeted in an attack within the next six months. Protecting against endpoint attacks is a challenge because endpoints exist at the intersection of humans and machines. Businesses struggle to secure their systems without interfering with the legitimate activities of their employees. And while technical solutions are highly effective, they can reduce, but not eliminate, the likelihood that employees will fall victim to social engineering attacks (Aarness, 2019).
